Local volunteer firefighters responded to a blaze this afternoon on Martin Street in Jefferson.

When firefighters from the Jefferson and West Jefferson Volunteer Fire Departments arrived at the scene, the house was partially engulfed in flames.

Once firefighters arrived on the scene they worked quickly to get the fire under control.

The home’s owner, Perry Durham arrived home after a short errand to find his house in flames and emergency vehicles blocking the street.

Durham said no one was home and his children were at school when the fire started. Durham said he bought the house in 2000.

At the time, there was no word yet on what started the fire, but firefighters believe it started in the basement.

“I went to the hardware store, and came back to this,” Durham said, indicating his home.

Firefighters concentrated streams of water through windows and through the basement access. New River Volunteer Fire Department was also called to the scene to provide additional manpower and equipment.
