Wilkes Central hit six three-pointers and had three players in double figures to help the Lady Eagles beat Ashe, 59-48.
The Lady Huskies led for most of the first quarter. Ashe got four early points from senior Chelsea Reavis, and a basket each from Emily Flanagan and Paige Spell. Halfway through the quarter, Ashe held an 8-5 advantage.
Martha Mastin scored four points for Central after a basket from Ashe’s Morgan Hudler to pull to within a point at 10-9. After a layup from Victoria Reed that pushed the Ashe lead to three points, Wilkes Central scored eight unanswered to close the first quarter. Salem Blair nailed back-to-back three-pointers and Taylor Mastin hit a layup to give the Lady Eagles a 17-12 lead after the first eight minutes of action.
The second quarter opened with a nice drive to the basket for a score from Hudler, but Central answered with seven straight to take a 10-point lead. Mastin hit a layup, Laken Blackburn hit a short jumper and Brooke Bentley swished a three-point shot to take a 24-14 lead.
Ashe battled back late in the half with five straight points from Ashton lee. Central would maintain a 28-22 advantage at the halftime break.
Both teams started play in the third hitting shots. Spell, Hudler, and Hallie Brown each scored while Bentley and Caitlyn Kilby each hit baskets for the opponent. Ashe trailed by just three points at 32-29 when the Eagles went on an 11-4 run to grab a 43-33 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Eight points would be the closest Ashe would get in the final stretch of the game. The Lady Eagles hit six free throws and got enough offense to maintain its lead the rest of the way.
Wilkes Central improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference while Ashe dropped to 0-4 and 0-1 in the MVAC.
Martha Mastin was the high scorer for Central with 17 points. Blackburn added 11 points and Bentley chipped in 10 points off the Bench.
Ashe was led by Hudler with 17 points. Reavis and Lee finished with nine points, Spell and Flanagan each had four, Brown had three and Reed finished with two points.
The Lady Huskies will travel to Forbush for its third straight road game this Friday.
