Ashe County picked up a much-needed victory on Friday, winning a thriller over Forbush, 35-33.

It would be Forbush that held the early lead after the first quarter. Forbush got baskets from Savannah Hill, Jessica Funk, and Maddi Marsch. Ashe got a three-pointer from Chelsea Reavis and a free throw from Paige Spell to be trailing by just three points at 7-4 halfway through the quarter. Alexis Parks hit a short jumper for Ashe, but then Anna Reavis buried a long three-point shot to take a 10-6 advantage. Morgan Hudler capped off the first with a layup at the buzzer, putting Ashe behind just two points after one.

The Lady Falcons had a big second quarter, outscoring Ashe 12-4 in the frame to take a 22-12 halftime lead. Forbush scored 10 straight down the stretch, including five points from Brittany Moose and three points from Hill.

Needing a big turnaround in the third quarter, the Lady Huskies answered the bell in a big way. Ashe erased its entire 10-point deficit by outscoring Forbush 17-7 to tie things up going to the fourth. Spell and Hallie Brown scored six in the quarter and Reavis swished her second three-pointer of the night to pull Ashe right back in it.

The fourth quarter was a low scoring one, but the Lady Husky defense was the real story in the second half. Ashe held Forbush to just nine points in the third and fourth quarters.

With the game on the line, Ashe took the first lead of the fourth with a free throw from Reavis. Forbush answered back with a jumper to go up 31-30. Spell connected on a short two-point basket from just outside the lane to put Ashe in front. Marsch had the response for the Lady Falcons with an easy layup to go ahead 33-32.

In the final 90 seconds, Hudler came up huge with the go-ahead layup and a free throw to give Ashe the 35-33 advantage. Ashe had a chance to ice the game at the free throw line with 10 seconds left, but missed both shots from the charity stripe. Forbush had a chance to tie or win the game on the last possession, but the home team was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Huskies picked up its first win of the season and moved to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Spell led Ashe with nine points. Brown finished with eight, Reavis had seven and Hudler added six points. Parks scored two points, Ashton Lee added two and Emily Flanagan added a free throw.

Hill scored nine to pace the Lady Falcons. Funk added six and Moose finished with six as well.

Ashe returns home to face Starmount on Tuesday.
