Ashe used a big first quarter to take an early lead that the team would continue building on the rest of the game on the way to a 52-37 win over East Wilkes.

The Lady Huskies started the game on an 11-2 run. Hallie Brown scored four points, Paige Spell had three, Emily Flanagan and Chelsea Reavis each added a bucket during the streak that forced the East Wilkes head coach to burn an early timeout in the first. The Lady Huskies held a 15-6 lead after one.

The home team kept adding on to the lead in the second quarter. Victoria Reed hit a short jumper, Flanagan hit another shot in the lane and Abby Lopp hit a pair from the charity stripe to give Ashe a 21-6 advantage to start the second period. East would battle back to get within seven points at 23-16 after a three-point shot from Erin Royal, but Ashe found its offense once again to close out the half strong. Spell hit two free throws, Brown added a pair from the line, Reavis swished a long three-pointer and Spell closed the half out with a layup to put Ashe in front 33-19.

Ashe kept a comfortable lead for the rest of the game. The Lady Huskies were up nine entering the fourth quarter before pushing that lead to a 15-point win, thanks to six points in the fourth from Spell and five points from Reed.

With the victory, Ashe captured its third straight win and moved to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Spell was the high scorer with 17 points. The sophomore also had nine rebounds, four steals and two assists. Reed capped off one of her best games of the young season with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to go along with five assists and three steals. Flanagan finished the game with six points and nine rebounds, Brown added six points and two steals, and Reavis had five points and a pair of rebounds. Lopp added four points, Alexis Parks had two points and Morgan Hudler finished with two points, five rebounds and three assists.

Royal led East Wilkes with 16 points and Shanisha White added nine.

Ashe will look to avenge an early-season loss to Avery on Tuesday when they travel to Newland for a non-conference battle with the Lady Vikings.
