A strong fall sports season has put Ashe County at the top of the Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings.

The scores are calculated by each team receiving a certain point total for how well the team does against the rest of the conference.

Currently, Ashe has 42.5 points, just ahead of second place Wilkes Central (39.5) and third place Forbush (38.5). East Wilkes is fourth with 35 points, followed by Elkin (33), West Wilkes (32), Starmount (29.5), Alleghany (21.5) and North Wilkes (20.5).

The Huskies picked up Mountain Valley Conference Championships in men’s soccer and women’s cross country, and had a second-place finish in women’s golf.

Wilkes Central reached second place, thanks in large part to the MVAC Championship in football and a runner-up finish in women’s tennis.

Forbush placed second in men’s soccer and women’s cross country to help the Falcons hold down the third overall spot.

In other area conferences, Avery County is currently in sixth place in the Western Highlands 1A/2A conference.

West Stokes leads the Northwest 1A/2A conference with 45.5 points, followed closely by Mount Airy (41.5), North Surry (40.5), Surry Central (40) and Bishop-McGuinness (38.5).

Watauga is the top team in the Northwestern 3A/4A conference with 75.5 points. The Pioneers captured the league championship in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, and women’s tennis. Watauga has a slim 6.5-point lead over Hickory in second place. Alexander Central (61.5), South Caldwell (55.5), Fred T. Foard (55), St. Stephens (50) and Hibriten (40) round out the scores for those teams in the NW 3A/4A.
