The most recent winter storm may have been a headache for many around the High Country, but the ski slopes on the mountain tops certainly enjoyed this snowfall.

Beech Mountain reported over a foot of fresh snow and now has 10 trails open. Elsewhere, Appalachian Ski Mountain reported eight inches of new snow and have seven slopes open for visitors, and Sugar Mountain had 10 inches of new snow.

For Sugar Mountain, the snow came just in time for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Slalom and Giant Slalom Competition, scheduled for Jan. 26-27. Racers from several different age groups and experience levels will hit the slopes bright and early Saturday morning for the competition.

Next weekend will also feature a pair of ski and snowboard competitions at Appalachian Ski Mountain on Friday and Sunday. Dragon Go Big or Go Home (Jan. 25) and SFTC Big Air (Jan. 27) will feature Rail Jam, Big Air and Slopestyle competitions.
