A pair of heartbreaking road losses put an end to a five-game winning streak for the Appalachian State men’s basketball team.

ASU traveled to Chattanooga on Thursday for a Southern Conference battle.

App jumped out to a 38-30 halftime advantage, and led by as many as 19 points in the second half, but Chattanooga stormed back to tie the game at 78-78 on a three-pointer by Dontay Hampton with 18 seconds remaining in the game.

Mountaineer guard Mike Neal had a chance to win the game in regulation, but his jumper with two seconds left was off target.

In overtime, Chattanooga outscored App State 13-10 to take a 91-88 win.

Nathan Healy led ASU with 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Tab Hamilton added 21 points, three rebounds and two assists, and Jay Canty scored 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists. Tevin Baskin scored 11 and had three blocks off the bench.

Z Mason was Chattanooga’s higher scorer with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Hampton added 22 off the bench on five three-pointers and Ronrico White chipped in 17 points.

The Mountaineers hoped to bounce back on Saturday with another road contest at Samford. App State led late in the first half, and never trailed by more than seven points at any point during the game, but could never get over the top in the second half. Samford held on for a 72-68 victory.

Canty was App’s go-to guy in this game with 19 points. The forward also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

Hamilton added 16 points, Neal scored 11 and Healy added 11. Michael Obacha scored five points but led all players with 13 rebounds.

Samford forward Clide Geffrard Jr. was the high scorer with 20 points. Raijon Kelly added 15, Brandon Hayman had 14 and Tim Williams scored 13.

ASU dropped to 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the SoCon.

The Mountaineers have a pair of home games this week, including a showdown with rival Davidson. First off however, ASU hosts Georgia Southern on Thursday before battling the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday.
