Louise Tadlock Copeland, missionary, social worker, lifelong volunteer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on Jan. 27, 2013, in Raleigh. She was 89.

Born June 5, 1923, in New Mexico to John Tadlock and Grace Puckett Tadlock, she graduated from Northeastern State College, Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1944. She earned a Master of Religious Education degree at the Southern Baptist Women’s Missionary Union Training School, Louisville, Ky., in 1946, where she met her husband, Dr. E. Luther Copeland. They married in 1946.

Appointed by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention as missionaries, they moved to Japan in 1949. They returned to the U.S. in 1956, and settled in Wake Forest. Mrs. Copeland received her Master of Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1969. She worked as a Social Work Supervisor and then as Chief Social Worker at John Umstead State Hospital, Butner in 1969-1976. The Copelands were re-appointed as missionaries to Japan in 1975. Upon their second retirement from missions in 1980, Mrs. Copeland resumed her career at John Umstead Hospital and retired in 1985.

Mrs. Copeland volunteered with Women in Action for the Prevention of Violence and its Causes, Urban Ministries, and various civic groups. She served as Guardian Ad Litem for North Carolina during 1989-2001 and was an active ministry volunteer at First Baptist Church, Raleigh, and at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, Raleigh.

Mrs. Copeland is survived by two of her three sisters; five children, the youngest is Luke Copeland of Boone; six grandchildren, including Hannah Copeland of Boone and Eleanor Copeland of Crumpler; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. E. Luther Copeland in 2011.

A memorial service, officiated by Reverend Dr. Nancy Petty, will be held at 3 p.m. on Feb. 17, 2013, at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough St., Raleigh.
