Elkin jumped out to an early lead and moved on to the semifinals of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Tournament with a 66-48 win over Ashe County.

Ashe trailed by just two points after the first quarter thanks to the efforts from three of the senior players. Jordan Spell hit a pair of shots, Seth Sheets had three points and Anderson Moore scored two.

Sam Lane got on track for Elkin early on with six points in the opening period.

In the second, Elkin began to build on its lead a bit, outscoring Ashe by a 15-8 margin to take a 26-17 halftime lead.

The Elks continued to find an offensive rhythm in the second half, scoring 40 points in the final 16 minutes of action. Ashe played better in the second half as well, but was never able to recover from its early deficit.

Elkin had four scorers reach double figures. Lane led all scorers with 19 points, Trey King had 13, Kody King added 12 and Chris Hudspeth chipped in 11 points.

Moore was Ashe’s high man with 12 points. The senior grabbed a team-high six rebounds as well. Spell finished with 11 points and six boards, Matthew Lee had six points and Johnathan Cox added six points and three steals. Eli Gambill added four points, Sheets finished with three, Cullen Ashley had two, Connor Bowers had two and Bradley Lucas rounded out Ashe’s scoring with two points.

The Elks move on to face Starmount in the MVAC semifinals.

Ashe (6-18 overall, 5-12 conference) will now wait and see who they will face in the 2A state tournament, set to begin on Monday. Tournament brackets will be officially released this weekend. It is speculated that the Huskies will either travel to Central Davidson High School or Trinity High School.
