The temperatures outside may be chilly for a few more weeks, but that won’t stop the Ashe County Huskies from starting its 2013 baseball season.

Ashe will open the season this Friday with its conference opener at Wilkes Central.

“I am really looking forward to the 2013 season. The kids have worked hard in the offseason and they have bought into what we are trying to accomplish in regards to the team goals that they have set,” said head coach Ronnie Pruitt. “I really like this group of kids because they are hard workers and they do what is asked of them.”

The Huskies begin the year with three straight road games. After the game at Central on Friday, Ashe will travel to Forbush on Tuesday, March 5 and then head to West Caldwell for a non-conference battle the very next day. As of right now, the team will have its first home game on March 8 against Starmount.

Coach Pruitt expects to rely heavily on his four senior players. Carson Knight, Jonathan Barlow, Cameron Guyton and Brandon Carpenter are expected to be the team leaders on and off the field.

Pruitt also highlighted three key areas of play this year for the team to have success.

Pitching is important at every level of baseball, especially high school. Coach Pruitt hopes his pitching staff can be consistent all season long and provide quality innings each time they pitch.

Defense will be a huge key for the Huskies. Ashe needs to play “exceptional team defense” and play fundamentally-sound baseball every game to get victories.

Finally, Pruitt touched on the importance of his team excelling at the plate. He said the team needed to do the little things to score runs and to execute all plays properly.

Overall, the Huskies will be playing hard and staying competitive this season inside and outside of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

“I look for my team to be hard worker and play with a lot of enthusiasm for seven innings every day,” added Coach Pruitt.
