Jennifer Johnson, Ashe County Schools kindergarten teacher, recently joined the ranks of accomplished teachers nationwide who achieved national certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
Johnson was recognized at Ashe County Schools monthly Board meeting for her attainment of this certification.
Mrs. Johnson completed and earned the certification through an intensive, multi-year process of standards-based performance assessment and peer review. She joined approximately 20,000 other National Board Certified teachers across the state of North Carolina.
North Carolina has the highest number of teachers certified in the United States.
National Board Certified Teachers must complete a rigorous review of their skills and work, which includes teacher portfolios, student work samples, videotapes, and thorough analysis of the candidates’ classroom teaching and student learning. Teachers also complete a series of written exercise that probe the depth of their subject-matter knowledge and their understanding of how to teach that material to students.
By completing the certification process, it signifies that teachers have developed and demonstrated the skills required of an accomplished education professional.
Ashe County Board of Education is proud that Mrs. Johnson is among a select group of excellent teachers nationwide who have achieved National Board Certification. Presently, Ashe County Schools have 51 National Board Certified Teachers actively employed.
Only teachers with a Standard II professional educator’s license who have a minimum of three years successful teaching experience are eligible to apply for National Board Certification.
