Ashe tennis upends Starmount
Ashe County tennis picked up its first win of the year in a match that took nearly three hours to complete. The Huskies took down the Rams, 5-4.
“This was a good match for us and we needed this win,” said head coach Larry Dix. “We have not had much court time due to the weather and many of our players are new to our team and just need more practice time.”
The top three seeds for Ashe won their matches in straight sets. Sam Bowers was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Ricardo Hernandez. Lucas Zeller picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win against Daniel Stinson and Een Shepherd was a 6-2, 6-2 winner against Nick Worley.
In the battle of fourth seeded players, Ashe’s Jacob O’Neal bounced back from a first set loss to beat Jordan Roberts. Roberts took the first set 7-5, but O’Neal quickly answered with a 6-2 triumph in the second. O’Neal held on for a 10-8 tiebreak win in the third set to take the match.
Starmount captured victories in the final two singles matches. Jonathan Allison was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Jake Harrington and Josh Tucker beat Travis Stanley in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
The Huskies needed one win in the three doubles matches to secure an overall team victory. Bowers and Zeller provided that with an 8-3 victory over Hernandez and Stinson.
The Rams were victors in the remaining matches. The tandem of Worley and Roberts edged out Shepherd and O’Neal, 9-8 while Allison and Tucker were 8-0 winners against Harrington and Stanley.
Ashe moved to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference after bouncing back from the season opening loss to Wilkes Central.
“I am proud of the way our team played and the way they went to the net,” added Coach Dix. “We need to work on ground strokes and consistency.
Ashe is scheduled to play at Elkin on Monday.
