Vitie Drake passed away at Haven Hospice, in Gainesville, Fla., with his loving family by his side, on March 16, 2013. He was 89.

He was born in Worcester, Mass., on Nov. 8, 1923.

Vitie is survived by his wife of 65 years Dolores (Dee) Derrico Drake.

The couple met at the University of Miami, Miami, Fla., following his World War II service in the U.S. Army in Europe. They spent the first 40 years of their lives raising their six children and working in Miami.

His children are: Neil (Ronnie) Drake, Gary (Jennifer) Drake, Gail Messler, Catherine (Richard Levine) Drake, Diane (Christopher Wick, deceased) Drake, and Mary (John) Gardner. His grandchildren are: Kristy Messler, Harry Drake, Sam (Melissa) Drake, Julia (Levine) Rogers, Bridget Levine, Dylan and Tyler Drake, and Kendall and Hannah Gardner.

Vitie and Dee retired to Fleetwood Falls in 1987 and enjoyed 23 years in Ashe County, participating in local activities and the wonderful mountain atmosphere he so loved. Vitie enjoyed his hobby of hand-built ceramic pieces and shared these with family and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday May 25, 2013, at Holy Trinity Episcopal church in Glendale Springs.
