The Ashe County men’s tennis team will have four players competing in the 2A Midwest Regional in Lexington next week.


Seniors Sam Bowers and Lucas Zeller each qualified for regionals in singles play by making it to the semifinals of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference qualifier held in Elkin last week. Also, Jacob O’Neal and Een Shepherd qualified for the tournament in doubles action by reaching the semifinals.


Zeller defeated Starmount’s Jonathan Allison in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 in his quarterfinal match.


For Bowers, his quarterfinal victory came over Josh Tucker of Starmount. Bowers handled his opponent easily, winning 6-1, 6-0.


In the semifinals, Wilkes Central player Garrett Lakey defeated Zeller, 6-0, 6-1. Central’s Parker Jordan took down Bowers with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.


Shepherd and O’Neal got to the doubles semifinals after beating Starmount duo Nick Worley and Jordan Roberts. The Ashe team won the match, 7-5, 6-0.


In the doubles semis, Wilkes Central’s duo of Kartik Patel and Pat Archibald defeated Shepherd and O’Neal, 6-2, 6-1.
