The Lady Huskies soccer team returned to action this past Friday after having a week off from play. The Huskies were on the road to face the North Surry Greyhounds for their second time of the year. The first match up showed a dominant Huskies’ offense that headlined the game with five goals in Ashe’s 5-0 victory. However, this match up was the same story, just different details as Ashe won 3-0 with two different scorers in contrast to Mackenzie Domske scoring all five goals for Ashe in their first match up.
Ashe jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes of the game when Shawnee Adams took advantage of a poor clearance by the Greyhounds defense after an Ashe County corner.
The Greyhounds defense attempted to clear the ball, which found its way to the feet of Adams for Ashe, who struck a shot that wound up in the back of the net, giving the Huskies a early commanding 2-0 lead. The first goal for Ashe came off of a corner kick when that the Greyhounds’ defense recorded an own goal.
Despite a comfortable lead, the Huskies continued to attack, and held the Greyhounds’ few runs scoreless. Adams nearly recorded her second goal of the game in the 26th minute when a corner by Brandy Houser was placed perfectly in front of the net, and Adams, who was crashing from the top portion of the box, struck the cross with a solid header. Adams’ shot at the goal flew just narrowly over the cross bar, resulting in a goal kick for the Greyhounds.
A mere four minutes later, Domske had a break away run down the central portions of the field and had a great look at the net, but when she fired her shot, it also was high of the target.
Ashe’s defense preserved their 2-0 lead for the remainder of the first half, with Houser and Stephanie Ratliff stopping numerous Greyhound runs.
After the halftime intermission, and the score still standing 2-0, the Huskies and Greyhounds started the second half evenly aggressive. In the opening 20 minutes, both teams had three very opportunistic runs, which all three runs for each team ended empty handed, and the score still stood at 2-0.
After 32 minutes of the score standing 2-0, Domske extended the lead for Ashe in the 68th minute of the game. Domske fired a shot inside the 18-yard box that found it’s way into the left side of the net, giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead, and sealing the victory.
Recording the shutout for the Huskies was Christina Cole and Mariah Richardson splitting duties in the net. Cole started the game and Richardson competed during the second half in the net.
The victory came after two straight tough losses in Mountain Valley Conference play from the hands of Forbush and Wilkes Central. The Huskies stand at 4-2 in the MVAC, currently sitting in third place behind Wilkes Central and Forbush and 6-4-1 on the season.
