The Huskies tennis team improved their Mountain Valley Conference record to 5-5 on the year when they defeated the Forbush Falcons on Tuesday evening here in Ashe County. The Huskies built a 4-2 lead after singles, then sealed the victory in style as they swept the Falcons 3-0 in doubles, to win the match with a final 7-2 team score.

The closest match for the Huskies in singles was Jacob Hamilton, who made his first appearance in the top six seeds for Ashe during the season due to the absence of John Wooten during singles play. Hamilton lost his first set 6-4, but responded with a commanding 6-2 victory in set two to force a third-set tiebreaker. Hamilton was able to pull ahead late in the tiebreaker and won the third set 7-5, giving him the victory for the match. Chase Smith, Nathan Greene, and Zeb Richardson also claimed singles victories for Ashe.

Smith downed his opponent 6-2 6-4, Greene won 6-0 6-1, and Richardson earned a 6-3 6-0 win after dropping his first three games in the first set.

In doubles, the Huskies flew by the Falcons winning all three doubles matches. The Huskies first team, Smith and Greene won 8-5, and the second team, Zach Richardson and John Wooten won 8-1. The Huskies third team had a tougher pairing as Justin Miller and Zeb Richardson narrowly won 9-7.

The victory moves the Huskies to 5-5 in the MVAC, which is one win ahead of Surry Central for the MVAC fifth seed. Ashe is battling with North Surry, who is also 5-5 and Starmount for the third and fourth seed of the MVAC.

Ashe’s regular season wraps up Friday, April 24 with Ashe’s road double-header. The Huskies will travel to Surry County to face two opponents with the first coming at 3 p.m. when the Huskies stop to face the Surry Central Golden Eagles. Following the completition of that match, the Huskies will pack up and travel on down the road to face North Surry, for their second match of the day.
