With a tough season thus far in the Mountain Valley Conference, the Huskies won their second game in the MVAC on their Senior Night when they downed the visiting Surry Central Golden Eagles 2-1 in extra innings.
Three players made the game for Ashe, with senior standout pitcher, Kendra Yearick hurling a complete game, eight innings, with 11 strikeouts, and sophomore Erin Covington scoring both runs for Ashe, and Allison Powers driving in Covington both times.
The first run for Ashe came when they were trailing 1-0 in the third inning, and Covington hit a double to place herself in scoring position. Powers followed up with a hit to drive in Covington to tie the score at 1-1. The Golden Eagles scored in their opening at bat in the first inning.
Ashe’s senior duo of Yearick and Annie Hegar paired together to earn the win, with Yearick on the mound, and Hegar calling the shots behind the plate. Yearick went eight innings, allowing only two hits, one unearned run, one walk, and struck out 11 batters.
Jessica Creed was tagged with the loss for Surry Central, as she allowed seven hits in seven innings of action. Ashe scored two runs against Creed, both of which were earned, and she struck out seven batters.
Offensively, Covington and Powers led the way. Covington went 2-4 with two doubles and two runs and Powers went 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Hegar recorded two hits, and Hillary Bowlin recorded a double.
The victory came on Senior Night for the Huskies, which celebrated the careers of six seniors. Hegar and Yearick headlines the senior class, as they both have signed to continue their career in college. Hegar has signed to play at Francis Marion, and Yearick signed early in the day Thursday to play at Peace College next year.
Hegar and Yearick’s fellow seniors include Natasha Faw, Sara Bumgarner, Ariel Farmer, and Kim McNeil.
The Huskies finished up their season on Friday when they traveled to Wilkes Central. They moved into the MVAC Tournament on Monday when they traveled to the second seeded Starmount Rams for a first round contest. Results of both games were unavailable at press time.
