Roger Wayne “Sammy” Day, age 63, passed away May 29, 2009 at his home in China Grove, NC. He was a member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church in Fleetwood.

He was a Marine and a Vietnam veteran. He worked for Overnight Trucking Company for 30 years. Later he worked for University Volvo as the wholesale parts manager.

Born Dec. 23, 1945 in Ashe County, he was the son of the late Quentin Day and Ruth Wallace Day of Fleetwood. He was preceded in death by his wife, Deberah Jones Day, in 2003. After retiring, he was a very active member of the D.A.V. and was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Judy McGee Day; four stepsons, Ricky, Michael, Chuck and Brandon; his mother, Ruth Wallace Day; his son, Roger Wayne Day of Albemarle, NC; and three sisters, Wanda Pope and husband, Jim, of Winston-Salem, NC, Jill Rice and husband, Mike, of Granite Falls, NC, and Melissa Bumgarner and husband, Mark, of Millers Creek, NC; and six step grandchildren.

Hartsell Funeral Home handled the arrangements. The funeral service was conducted at Hartsell Funeral Home and officiated by the Rev. Jerry Wade. Internment was at West Concord Cemetery in Concord, NC with military rites.
