In action this past week, the Huskies soccer program took a step out of tradition with two huge victories over fellow Mountain Valley schools North Wilkes and Alleghany.
In tradition, soccer is a low scoring game, with a large portion of games posting one, two, or three goal differentials in the team’s scores. However, in two games, Ashe outscored their opponents 20-1, with the largest differential being a 15-0 victory over Alleghany, which could easily be a school record for Ashe for the largest margin of victory.
“We really did not try to run the score up,” coach Richard Gill elaborated following the game. “The team just had a really good match.”
The other victory for Ashe came on Tuesday when they traveled to North Wilkes, which the Huskies came away with a 5-1 victory.
In the contest with North Wilkes, Lalo Montoya led the way with two goals, and Jose Zapata, Andrew Lopp, and Tyler Keagy each scored one goal.
In the victory over Alleghany, three players recorded what most soccer players never experience, a ‘hat trick,’ as three players scored three goals in a single match. However, stealing the spot light from the three hat tricks was Lopp who was the leading scorer with four goals in the match. Keagy, Derry Nixon, and Alex Vogl were the three Huskies to record hat tricks during the match. Bradley Lyall and Montoya added a goal apiece to bring the Huskies goal total to 15.
The two victories moved the Huskies’ record to 4-1 in the MVAC, with their lone loss coming from the Starmount Rams.
This week is a crucial week for Ashe as they face off with Wilkes Central and Forbush, the two perennial MVAC soccer powerhouses. Forbush, who is currently ranked first in the NCHSAA by the NCSCA, is 8-0 on the season and 4-0 in MVAC play. Wilkes Central, who is 2-2-1 on the season and 2-0 in the MVAC, faced off with Forbush on Monday at Wilkes Central, then hosts Ashe this evening, then travels to Elkin on Thursday.
