In JV action, the Lady Huskies defeated Elkin 33-16 and the boys’ team made it look easy by cruising to a 61-31 victory.
The varsity Lady Huskies put on another defensive clinic, holding the Lady Elks to just 20 points, winning the game 39-20. MacKinsey Johnson led the way for Ashe with 12 points, followed by Mallary Clay with 7 and Courtney Bowers with 6, hitting two shots beyond the three-point line. Mariah McVey, Chandler Christensen, and Caitlin Elliott each contributed 4 points in the victory. Lizzie Hanes also cracked the scorebooks with a bucket of her own.
The Lady Huskies continue rolling through their opponents, pushing their record to 17-1 overall, and a perfect 13-0 in the conference.
Over in the varsity boys’ match up, Greyson Wells put on a show for the Husky faithful who made the trip down the mountain. Wells was on fire from the field, scoring 30 points to carry the Huskies to a 56-51 win.
Ashe jumped out to an 8-point lead, but Elkin crawled back in the second quarter to cut the lead to four at the half.
The Huskies maintained that slim lead through the third quarter, and looked to pull away starting the fourth with a 10-4 run to take a 50-40 lead nearly three minutes into the quarter. Free throws were a struggle down the stretch for Ashe as they missed six straight from the charity stripe, letting the Bucking Elks fight back to within four points once again.
Wells would be clutch in the final minute of the game, hitting six free throws to push the Huskies on to the victory.
Bryson Payne was second on the team in scoring with 7 points, Cory Roten and Zach Richardson each chipped in with 6, and Matt Nichols added 3 points in the win.
Elkin had a balanced scoring night from their three top performers. Sam Lane led the way with 12, followed by Tre Hayes with 8 and Jermaine Hayes with 7.
Ashe improved their record to 13-5 overall, and 11-2 in Mountain Valley conference action.
