Following a very successful winter sports season, the Ashe County Huskies are sitting in fourth place in the Wachovia Conference Cup standings.

The Wachovia Cup standings are based on how each school performs in every sport for the entire academic year. Wachovia has sponsored this award since 1980. This award is given to the top school in each of the four classifications in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

The Conference Cup is awarded to the top team of each of the 47 conferences in the state.

In the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Cnference, Starmount currently holds the lead with 81.5 points. Forbush is in second place with 70.5 points, after a championship in men’s swimming and a second place finish in women’s swimming. Wilkes Central sits in third place with 68 points. The Huskies are just 4.5 points back of the Eagles in fourth place with 63.5. Rounding out the rest of the standings, Alleghany and West Wilkes are tied for fifth with 51 points, followed by East Wilkes with 42 and North Wilkes with 32.5.

Ashe helped themselves greatly with its conference championships in both men’s and women’s basketball, as well as the wrestling team’s finish in the top tier of the conference standings.
