As the summer winds down, the festival season in Ashe County gets ready for its second wind. There are events planned in September and October to showcase the county’s heritage through music and craftsmanship.

First up is the Greater L.A. Festival in Lansing. This 11th annual event offers a variety of music and children’s activities along with some really tasty treats.

The festival is planned for Friday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 11 at the American Legion Ball Field in Lansing on NC 194N just below the old school. Vendors and crafts will be set up both days from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Activities those days include hay rides, children’s activities, apple butter demonstration (and you will want to purchase some of the results), along with barbecue chicken, hamburgers and hotdogs, and funnel cakes.

Music is a big draw to the festival each year. Performances are scheduled for Friday evening, and all day on Saturday. The schedule is as follows:

Friday, Sept. 10

5 p.m.: Kaylon Lewis, guitar

6 p.m.: Piney Grove Choir

7 p.m.: Southern Rock

Saturday, Sept. 11

9:30 a.m.: Tanya Hudler singing the National Anthem and Kaylan Lewis on guitar

10-11 a.m.: Fun Road

11 a.m.-noon: Sturgill Baptist Church Choir

12-12:30 p.m.: Tom Gentry

12:30-1 p.m.: Kaylan Lewis

1-2 p.m.: Melinda Walsh & Heaven Bound

2-3 p.m.: Bluff Mountain Boys

4-5 p.m.: White Oak Road Bluegrass

The festival is sponsored by Lansing Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and Lansing American Legion. Admission is by donation. No pets are allowed.

Following the Greater L.A. Festival will be the Festival of the Frescoes in Glendale Springs and the New River Festival at Todd in Todd, both coming in early October.
