“These dates could change, as late as the scheduled day to begin filing,” said Ashe County Board of Elections Deputy Director Devon Houck. “The actual filing period will depend on when the state sets the primary, and that hasn’t yet been determined.
Houck said the candidate filing period is scheduled to open, as of press time Wednesday afternoon, at noon on Monday, Feb. 13 and end at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 29. The North Carolina Primary is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 8.
Voters will determine each party’s nominee for governor, lieutenant governor, House and Senate as well as all 13 congressional districts and the Republican nominee for president. Neither U.S. Senators Kay Hagan nor Richard Burr are up for election this fall. There will also be a number of non-partisan judge seats up for election, but there may be changes in the districts served.
Three Ashe County Commissioners will be up for election, seats held by Larry Rhodes and Gerald Price (four-year) and Gary Roark (two-year).
Filing for the open position of Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor and two open seats on the school board (Lee Beckworth and C.B. Jones) will occur June 11-July 6 as those seats are non-partisan and there is no primary.
These dates are tentative and must be approved by the state board of elections.
