Ashe County native Mary Rhodes was visiting from Pennsylvania this week and stopped by the Jefferson Post office Tuesday to show off a $2 North Carolina note dated 1861 she recently purchased.
A Lansing native who now resides in West Chester, Pa., Rhodes, whose maiden name is Spencer, has been collecting old bank notes for the last couple of years.
While proud of the “obsolete note,” the formal name used by paper money collectors to define old federal and state notes, Rhodes is especially proud of a sheet of uncut “Colonial” notes she recently came across at an auction house in Pennsylvania
She and her husband, David, were briefly visiting the area and are headed back to Pennsylvania.
