A slow start doomed Ashe from the beginning as Wilkes Central cruised on to a 50-26 win over the rival Huskies.

Both teams opened with a sluggish start. The Eagles scored eight points in the first quarter while Ashe tallied four. Jordan Spell scored the first basket of the night while Jonathan Cox scored the other two points after returning from an injury that forced him to miss the Avery and Watauga games.

Central found its groove in the second quarter, but the same could not be said for the Huskies. Isaiah Osborne hit a layup and Victor Anthony hit a pair from the charity stripe to take a 12-4 lead. Cox drove to the basket for a nice layup to keep Ashe close. However, the Eagles reeled off 10 straight points with baskets from five different players. Ashe closed the second quarter with a three-pointer from Zach Lawrence, but still trailed 22-9 at the half.

The Eagles built on the lead even more in the third quarter. Central opened the frame with 11 straight points, including three straight three-point baskets from Will Cornette, which gave Wilkes Central a commanding 33-9 advantage.

After a timeout, Ashe answered with eight straight of its own. Cullen Ashley hit a layup then a short jumpshot, and Seth Sheets hit a pair of free throws and a layup to make the score 33-17. The Eagles ended the third with baskets from Anthony and Austin Staley, holding a 40-20 lead with only the fourth quarter remaining.

Wilkes Central outscored Ashe 10-6 in the fourth. Jacob Stinson led the Eagles with four in the quarter while Ashley was the high scorer for Ashe with three.

Overall, the Eagles moved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Ashe saw its record drop to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MVAC.

Osborne paced Central with 10 points. Cornette added nine points, Anthony had eight, Staley had six and Stinson also finished with six.

Ashley led all Husky scorers with seven. Cox added five, Sheets finished with four and Lawrence added three points. Spell, Eli Gambill and Matthew Lee each had two points and Anderson Moore hit a free throw.

Up next, Ashe travels to Forbush on Friday.
