At least six inches of snow fell on Ashe County between yesterday afternoon and early this morning as a winter storm blew through southern Appalachia.
Blue Ridge Electric (BREMCO) reports 4,616 of 73,085 regional members were affected by the storm, with the longest outage being approximately 18 hours. Of 19,805 members in Ashe County, 3,790 — 19 percent — lost power.
The Ashe County Sheriffs Office Communications Division reports that Old Highway 16 is closed near Shatley Springs Rd. where a tree fell blocking traffic and damaging power lines. The road will remain closed until BREMCO can safely remove the tree.
No injuries or incidents related to the storm were reported by ACSO or Ashe Memorial Hospital.
The Ashe County Department of Transportation has been clearing roads since the onset of the storm approximately 3 p.m. yesterday. Some roads have remained uncleared due to numerous downed trees across the county, but DOT officials are unable to provide a current list of road closures at this time.
Ashe County Schools announced early this morning all schools would be closed for students and staff. The missed school day will be made up Jan. 21.
